PROMPT
Rules of Engagement were developed collaboratively with the design students and gallerists to reimagine traditional gallery norms to make the space more participatory. My team interpreted rule #7, “Invite someone back,” and expressed it through a site-specific installation in Gallery A, incorporating the rule’s text within defined material and color constraints.

initial concept
We wanted visitors to feel the physical sensation of tearing off their invitation back to the gallery. Moreover, we selected bookmarks as the ticket form to reference the Liberation Book Club programming.

Planning
Each rule had its own “flyer.” The tear-aways would contain words “filling in the blanks” of the text above. We adapted methods and dimensions to our readily-available, low-cost materials: tabloid printer paper, cardstock, and vinyl sticker paper.
Visual Identity
We referenced the Jacob, Lawrence Gallery's official color palette. We felt the font Redaction was fitting for promoting Liberation Book Club, where discussion becomes a collective reaction to dominant narratives and a reclaiming of voice.
process
We experimented with adhesive and perforation techniques to perfect the "tear-off" experience. Precise cutting and alignment were necessary to reveal the blue messaging below.
Reflections
I learned a lot about the nuances of physical printing and installation. Precision was extremely important, as mistakes compound quickly into messy execution. I now have a better understanding of paper, vinyl, and adhesive, and I'm comfortable using these materials to produce elegant installations.
